In a tactical co-feature, world-class submission specialist Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza captured the vacant STRIKEFORCE World Middleweight (185 pounds) Championship with a unanimous decision over American military hero Tim Kennedy.

In an all-action fight, Mo (7-1) was the aggressor in the first, scoring a body slam in the opening minute of the round. But, Feijao (10-2) was unfazed by the take down and got to his feet without suffering any significant damage.

After trading punches in the second, Feijao came out swinging in the third. He landed a few strong combinations and caught Mo with a powerful knee. Clearly wounded, Mo tried to take his opponent to the ground to minimize the damage but, while locked up standing, Feijao battered Mo with a series of brutal slashing elbows to Mo’s head, knocking him out at 1:14.

“I hit him hard with the right hand and the knee,” Feijao said. “I saw he was hurt, but I was just going to continue to hit him. I felt his grip loosening and knew that he was done.

“I have a new coach in boxing and Muay Thai that made the difference. “I just made my dream. I saw in his last fight he wanted to get inside. My strategy worked perfectly.”

A wounded Mo was disappointed but not dejected in his performance.

“I just got to make a few adjustments,” Mo said. “He fought a hell of a fight, but I’m not worried. I’ll come back stronger.”

Jacare (13-2-1) wasn’t able to get Kennedy to the ground, but his effective and relentless counterpunching was the difference maker in the fight.

A deep gash opened up over Kennedy’s left eye early in the third round. Kennedy (12-3) tried taking the fight to the mat, but it was ineffective against Jacare, who was the superior striker landing the harder, crisper punches.

Kennedy continued to attack Jacare throughout the fight, never giving up, but was unable to land anything that hurt his opponent.

“I felt through the fight that he felt my hand,” Jacare said. “I was landing some big punches and I thought I was winning the fight. I was ready to fight everywhere in the cage, but I was surprised how strong he was. He was strong, but I was the one connecting and landing the damaging punches.”

Kennedy, who landed more punches with a higher percentage, was a bit surprised in the unanimous decision loss.

“I was really frustrated with the end result,” Kennedy said. “Jacare is an amazing contender and now a champion. I was humbled that I was able to go five rounds with him, but I think it goes without saying that I’d like another five rounds with that guy. It’s going to be different.

“We’re talking about the most decorated grappler in the planet. I expected him to want to grapple. He countered with me the whole time and I was surprised. I should have put more pressure on him. The only time anyone got dropped in the fight was when I dropped him, but he’s got the belt.”

In a featured lightweight (155 pounds) bout, KJ Noons scored a second round KO (:19) over fearless brawler and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Jorge Gurgel in a short, but spectacular match.

The two exchanged powerful punches in the first, but a powerful and controversial blow from Noons a split second after the sound of the closing bell for the first round proved to be the difference. Noons (10-2) came out swinging in the second, landing an overhand right followed by a left hook that sent Gurgel (13-7) flying to the canvas. He followed it up with punches on the ground, but the fight was clearly over as Gurgel could not recover.

“By any means am I a dirty fighter, no,” Noons said. “I was just going in there to try to engage and get the round. I was in the heat of the moment and I couldn’t stop my hands as they were going. It wasn’t cheap and I’m not trying to be dirty – I’m just trying to finish the fight. I didn’t’ intentionally do it, it’s just the rush.

“I thought it was a great fight. He had a really good game plan. He was moving around the ring and was trying to get me to engage more. I just knew I had to not over commit on my punches and my kicks and I’d be able to keep standing. I’m not surprised he didn’t take me down.”

Gurgel didn’t make any excuses or complaints in losing.

“I apparently got hit a couple of times when the round was up, but it’s not KJ’s fault,” Gurgel said. The referee is responsible for separating the fighters. I’m not taking anything away from (KJ) He landed a good right hand and a left hook.

“I have no excuses whatsoever. I came up short in my performance and I’m really upset. I thought I had his number. I’ve never been rocked before. I’ve had 20 professional fights and I’ve never felt that. KJ is a world class fighter.”

In the opening fight of the SHOWTIME telecast, Chad Griggs won an upset, TKO victory over previously unbeaten Bobby Lashley at the end of the second round.

An experienced and talented wrestler, Lashley immediately took the fight to the ground in the first round. He expended a lot of energy trying to hit Griggs (9-1) while on the ground, but Griggs was able to counter and opened up a gushing cut over Lashley’s left eye.

Once again, Lashley (5-1) took the fight to the ground in the second, but his punches didn’t do enough damage to the more experienced Griggs. The cut worsened with Lashley apparently gassed in the closing moments of the second round and the referee called the bout immediately following the conclusion of the round.

“This is a dream come true fighting for STRIKEFORCE. I got offered a big fight right off the bat and I’m super pumped I got the win,” Griggs said. “I know he was bleeding all over me. I think he was tired and he was hurt already. I think it was a good call to end it.

“I felt him starting to fade a little bit at the end of the first round. I could hear him breathing really hard and could feel him using a lot of muscle to land punches. I was comfortable because he wasn’t really catching me and he was using a lot of energy. I don’t think that he’s really been hit before or been tested. I could see it in his eyes that the fight was changing. He was still hustling, but I think he was losing some heart in there.”

The event will replay on Monday, Aug. 23 at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT on SHO 2 and will be available On Demand from Tuesday, Aug. 24 until Monday, Sept. 6.

… RIGGS, COUTURE ALSO VICTORIOUS ON SHOWTIME

PHOENIX, ARIZ. (Aug. 13, 2010) — On the night that STRIKEFORCE crowned its first-ever Women’s Welterweight Tournament Champion, hometown hero Joe “Diesel” Riggs upended tough up-and-comer Louis “Handgunz” Taylor and Ryan Couture won his Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) debut on Friday night on STRIKEFORCE Challengers on SHOWTIME®.

Miesha “Takedown” Tate won two fights on the night, both by unanimous decision, to hoist the inaugural STRIKEFORCE Women’s Welterweight Tournament belt and became the No. 2 contender behind Marloes Coenen in the competitive 135-pound division. She also may have earned a possible future date with current STRIKEFORCE Middleweight Champion Sarah Kaufman.

“Sarah Kaufman, you’re amazing,” Tate announced loudly to the near sold out Dodge Theatre crowd, seeking out Kaufman from the other side of the cage. “I can’t wait to fight you again.”

She later added: “It’s a dream come true. I came here on a mission and I accomplished my goal. And now it’s on to step two and getting that championship belt and getting another shot at Sarah Kaufman.”

Tate (11-2) used her world-class grappling to control both fights. She beat Maiju Kujala (4-2; Strikeforce debut) in the first two-round semifinal, rested for a good 35 minutes and then went back at it, beating the scrappy Hitomi “Girlfight Monster” Akano (16-8) in the final by controlling the ground position and simply out-muscling her Japanese opponent.

Akano submitted Carina “Beauty But the Beast” Damm (15-4) at 1:48 of the second round to earn her final shot at Tate.

STRIKEFORCE Women’s Middleweight (145 pounds) Champion Cris Cyborg liked what she saw from Tate on a night that celebrated women’s MMA. “This was a great opportunity for women’s fighting and I’m looking forward to seeing Miesha fight Sarah in the future,” she said.

But Cyborg wasn’t the most visible of fighters watching cage side. That distinction would have to go to Couture’s famous father, MMA legend Randy Couture, who proudly took his spot in his son’s corner for his successful MMA pro debut. “I’m very proud of him and he has a great passion for the sport,” Couture told the nationally televised SHOWTIME audience.

STRIKEFORCE fans will undoubtedly be seeing more of Las Vegas’ Couture in the near future. He used his signature triangle choke move at 1:15 in the first round to beat Lucas Stark of Chandler, Ariz., in a 155-pound lightweight match.

“It’s kind of a load off to get the first win and I hope there won’t be a long wait for the next one and I can show some new things next time,” Couture told the media afterwards. “I thought once it hit the ground I would catch him but I didn’t expect it to be that quick. I just lucked out that way I guess.”

Couture said he couldn’t find his jab early against the shorter Stark. “I decided to get where I was comfortable and get it to the ground,” he said. “I’m a slow starter when it comes to the striking. I just locked it in and got the tap.”

Down on the judges’ scorecards early in his 182-pound catch weight fight, Riggs (33-11) knew he would have to come up with something special in the third round, and did just that, pinning Taylor (6-2) against the cage before the ref stopped the fight at 2:07 and Riggs was awarded the decision by submission by punches.

“I felt great fighting and winning in front of Phoenix,” Riggs said. “I love my fans.”

He said STRIKEFORCE fans haven’t seen the last of his tough opponent. “He’s a prospect. He’s a big guy. His standup was very athletic and he’ll be a dangerous guy for anyone.”

The fights will re-air as follows.

DAY CHANNEL

Monday, Aug. 16, at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT SHO 2

EVERETT, WASH. (July 23, 2010) —

Fast-rising heavyweight prospect Shane Del Rosario kept his perfect record in tact with a first round knockout over Lolohea Mahe in the main event of Friday’ STRIKEFORCE Challengers MMA event on SHOWTIME® from the Comcast Arena at Everett in Everett, Wash.

In the co-main event, undefeated Sarah Kaufman defended her STRIKEFORCE Women’s Welterweight World Championship with a thrilling third round knockout of challenger Roxanne Modafferi.

Del Rosario (10-0) came out swinging in the first, using his speed as an advantage over the larger Mahe (6-2-1). After a short stoppage of time after an inadvertent low blow to Mahe, Del Rosario pressed his opponent against the cage and continued with an onslaught of punches and knees. He used a left knee to the body to wound Mahe and followed up with a combo causing Mahe to double over in pain. The referee stopped the fight at 3:48 of the first round.

“I knew he didn’t like shots to the body, so I kept hitting the body until he dropped,” said Del Rosario, who hopes to have catapulted himself into the thick of things in STRIKEFORCE’s deep heavyweight division. “I’ve been training really hard and it’s finally paying off. I’m ready to step up the opposition and move on.

A wounded Mahe was clearly disappointed with his performance.

“He hurt me with the knee to the stomach,” Mahe said. “It just knocked the air out of me.”

In a hard-fought, technical match, Kaufman (12-0) stole the show and emerged victorious with an impressive body slam at 4:45 of the third round. Modafferi (15-6) seemed to win the first round, but Kaufman came out blazing in the second, finishing the round with a flurry of punches. The highlight-reel body slam brought the crowd to its feet and ended the title defense in dramatic fashion.

“I got a knockout,” Kaufman said. “It feels good to get the KO and to impress. She was really good at the take downs, but I could feel her getting tired. The opportunity was there with the body slam and I took advantage of it.”

Bobby Voelker (22-8) emerged victorious with a split decision victory over local fan favorite Cory Devela (9-5). The first round was close but Devela seemed to be the aggressor in the second even though he was on the bottom of the action. The hometown crowd was surprised when the scores were announced following the third, 29-28 Devela, 29-28 Voelker, 29-28 Voelker.

“I should have been better,” Voelker said. “I always want to finish my opponent. It just shows I need to go back and work on my game. I didn’t anticipate him to fight in the clinch like that – that surprised me.”

Devela, who had taken a year off from the cage to help his girlfriend battle cancer, disagreed with the decision.

“I was surprised, I thought I had it,” Devela said. “Even when I was on the ground I thought I was working on submissions. I just shouldn’t have left it up to the judges.

“He had a lot of control in the second, but I thought I was still active. I thought I would have come away with the decision. Nothing against him – but I’d like to do this fight again.”

In the second fight of the evening, Mike “Mak” Kyle (17-7-1) won his fifth straight fight with a first round submission (rear naked choke) of Abongo Humphrey (7-2) in a light heavyweight matchup.

Kyle threw solid combos throughout the fight, tiring Humphrey and getting him into positions where he was susceptible to submissions and a barrage of punches. The win may enter Kyle into consideration to challenge the winner of “King” Mo Lawal’s STRIKEFORCE Light Heavyweight Title defense against Rafael Feijao, who Kyle defeated in 2009.

“I stayed calm and relaxed and I knew I was in great shape,” Kyle said. “He gave me that choke – he gassed out.

“I never gave up when a lot of people thought I should. This is just a stepping stone for me. I’m waiting for a lot of things to open up. When I’m blessed with the opportunity, I’ll be ready for it.”

Humphrey, who suffered only his second career loss, knew he made some mistakes.

“I didn’t execute my game plan at all,” Humphrey said. “I dropped my hands a couple of times. It was just bad all the way around. He’s a good fighter – I give him a lot of respect. I’ll just live to fight another day.

In the opening fight of the telecast, hometown favorite Caros Fodor (3-0, 1 NC) dominated Thomas Diagne (1-2) en route to an impressive unanimous decision victory. Fodor, who lives and trains in nearby Kirkland under MMA legend Matt Hume, consistently went for the clinch then attempted the takedowns and submissions.

The undefeated prospect couldn’t complete the submission attempts and was disappointed in earning his first decision victory.

“I should have gone for the submission more when I had them,” Fodor said. “Tonight, against his style, I was a little patient. I wasn’t 100 percent, but it was still great to earn the victory in front of my hometown fans. No excuses, but I should have submitted him.”

COMPETITORS FROM AROUND THE WORLD COOL DOWN AT A VERY, VERY HOT ISKA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

As the east coast of the U.S. a record-high heat index, Martial Arts competitors from more than 35 countries were graced with the opportunity to travel to the Coronado Springs Resort in Disneyworld to enjoy hotel air conditioning and recreational pools – a great way to cool down from the heat wave and check out some hot, hot, hot martial arts competition.

This year’s US Open ISKA World Martial Arts Championships was held the weekend of July 9-10, 2010, conveniently giving competitors a chance to spend the 4th of July weekend however they pleased before an intense week of gearing up for the US Open.

With performances from the US Open Night of Champions being televised on ESPN, competitors were ready to give their best and most difficult performances for a chance on the night time stage and possibly on television. The best of the best from around the world were on hand.

Friday’s competition began bright and early at 9:00 in the morning with the eliminations for the XMA Trickz Battle. Team Full Circle, Straight Up, USA All Stars, and Paul Mitchell were just a few of the many participating teams in men’s team sparring. After some intense competition, Team Paul Mitchell and the USA All Stars advanced to the ISKA nighttime finals.

Just a few rings over, the forms and weapons divisions on stage were drawing more and more spectators after the conclusion of team fighting to watch the four horsemen of Team Paul Mitchell: Matt Emig, Rudy Reynon, Kalman Csoka, and Marc Canonizado. All continued to lead the extreme and creative divisions as expected. In musical weapons, half of the division dropped their weapon, including Rudy Reynon and Marc Canonizado. David Armstrong was on a different streak when men’s extreme forms came along. Armstrong demonstrated one of the best forms of the night with clean hands and a double corkscrew. Although it was near perfect, it still wasn’t enough to drive Marc Canonizado into second place. Canonizado used the plentiful amount of space in the ring to his advantage. He nailed all of his difficult tricks and they were more dynamic than ever.

It was odd (but certainly welcome!) to be done with the first day of events by 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As competitors and spectators filed out of the competition arena, they were surprised to find the sun still shining and plenty of time to grab a bite to eat, see some of the Disney attractions and rest up for the next day’s competition.

Saturday competition got everyone up early – except for the adult competitors. The adults were able to sleep in two extra hours before their events began at 11:00 AM. Many adults took advantage of the later schedule by going to Downtown Disney on Friday night to enjoy some popular shops, restaurants, and some late night entertainment.

After winning their divisions on Friday, Micah Karns, Cole Eckert, Austin Crain, Hunter Crain, and Kyle Montagna all were in the run-offs Saturday afternoon. On the line was the prestige and a chance at getting on stage for the Night of Champions and maybe being on ESPN!

In the 14-17 weapons division, Micah Karns and Kyle Montagna both dropped their weapons, leaving Austin Crain to win by a hundredth of a point, with his brother Hunter in second place. Micah Karns didn’t go home empty handed as he won the 14-17 (creative/musical/extreme) CMX forms grands.

It wasn’t all about forms though. “This is my division,” shouted Robbie Lavoie during his first fight in the men’s 18-29 super lightweight division. He certainly proved his statement true when it came down to Lavoie and Victor Suarez. It was grueling match but Lavoie came out on top. Both Hamed Firouzi and Niko Negron chalked a win up for Full Circle when they won the 18-29 lightweight and light-middle weight divisions.

The fighting grand championships were held during the day. For the women, Cindy Cote of Team Straight Up defeated Terri Jacoby for the overall grand championship title. For the men, it came down to a rematch between Hamed Firouzi of Team Full Circle and Raymond Daniels of Team USA All Stars. When these two met for the Superfight finals at the New England Open, Daniels soundly defeated a tired Firouzi. This time Firouzi was far more in the game and gave Daniels more of a challenge but in the end, it was Daniels with the 7-4 score and the title for 2010.

Denver, Colorado’s Austin Jorgenson will certainly be remembered after he won both the 18-29 men’s forms and weapons grand championships with his soft style performances. Jorgenson came to US Open for his first ISKA/NASKA tournament and defeated some world-class competitors like Matt Emig (and it was Emig’s birthday! Happy birthday Matt!)

Finals

Danny Etkin of 100 Percent Performance opened the US Open Night of Champions show. Walking out with the audience clapping to his intro music, he made sure he was the center of everyone’s attention. Etkin started with a jack knife and a corkscrew and finished his form with hard hand techniques and clean stances. Jacob Pinto of team AKA began his rendition with the “Jesus flip” to get the crowd going. Pinto twisted in almost every trick he did to enhance his difficulty after having to follow Etkin’s flawless performance. ProRank’s Sammy Smith was the last to take the stage in the 13 and under ISKA forms world championship. She showed how serious she was by slapping the ground after her butterfly twist. With two difficult kick combinations directly after each other, Smith made the judges’ decision even more difficult with no mistakes in her form. In the end of a very close contest, it was Pinto who took home his first US Open Night of Champion’s award.

In the 14-17 year-old forms ISKA division, Cole Eckert fell on his webster which meant that he was out of the running. Dayna Huor landed her webster with synchronicity to a new choice of music in comparison to her previous songs. Micah Karns blew everyone away with his clean and dynamic hand techniques leading into a double corkscrew combination – with his hands behind his back. Karns took home the trophy for his first very first Night of Champion’s win.

The 13 and under weapons division began with Jacob Pinto on stage for the second time of the night. He began his form by spinning his kama on his thumb as he rotated 360 degrees – a pretty impressive way to exaggerate his kama work. Andrew Franklin took the stage with his bo and immediately began his form. Franklin used rock music that gave the audience a relieving break from all the trance music with hip-hop introductions used by many of his competitors. Franklin completed his form flawlessly then bowed out to Jackson Rudolph. Rudolph impressed everyone by taking recognizable maneuvers and adding difficult and subtle changes. Mackensi Emory was the final performer and nailed her kama form and really put her controlled kama work and acrobatics on display. As Rudolph did with his bo, Emory added subtle changes to increase the difficulty in her techniques. In the end, it was Rudolph who was voted the winner by the judges.

Julia Pinto, also of AKA, kicked off the 14-17 weapons grand championship with her bo. Pinto showed clean bo work, which was something on which she had to rely, because Austin Crain was up next. Crain landed many difficult tricks with four different kama releases. Mikayla Johnson, New England Open’s grand champion, took kama releasing to the next level by throwing her kamas in the air and around her legs. Johnson has worked with one of the most creative kama practitioners, Stephen Renney, and it has certainly paid off. Kyle Montagna took a different approach in his quest for the win by performing his traditional bo form. With strong stances and strikes, Montagna brought more difficulty to the judges for their final decision. The final decision was in favor of Crain this evening.

The adults were next on stage with the women’s forms championship. Nikki Stanley showed her advantageous flexibility from the get-go of her form and proceeded to show the crowd that she can throw tricks as well. Olivia Wicker brought some Japanese techniques to the stage and completed her form with intensity, giving Becca Ross that extra motivation to do a better form. Ross threw all her tricks smoothly and finished with strong hands. Caitlin Dechelle ended the division. Dechelle has grown to become stronger and faster through the years, and that’s what it took this evening as she attained the win.

Legendary World Breaking Champion, Chip Townsend performed next in a in a world-record attempt to break his own record of 36 boards in less than 8 seconds using the Combat Board breaking format. Townsend destroyed 42 boards using both hands and both feet in a multi-direction display of havoc. Next up was another breaking icon, Larry Fields who set yet another world record by breaking 8 baseball bats with his shin in under 10 seconds! Incredible.

The XMA trickz battle brought the crowd to its feet with a ton of action. Marc Canonizado, Matt Emig, Mindy Kelly, and Kalman Csoka were the experienced judges for the contest. Donovan Sheehan walked out to battle Jacob Pinto in the two minute round for the junior championship. Pinto was a little energizer bunny and kept going and going as his non-stop tricking power garnered him the win.

The next battle was for the adults as Team Massive (Mike Gutherie, David Armstrong, Nelson Zuniga, and Tyler Powell) took the stage to battle Team Destruction (Daniel Graham, Anis Cheurfa, and Sammy Vasquez). In a five-minute session of “anything goes” which included aggressive tricks, near-collisions and a whole lot of attitude, Team Destruction took the win. Destruction was awarded $1,000 for first place and Massive was given $500 and the crowd was provided with a really entertaining battle!

Mike Welch brought Team Infinity out of Wisconsin and to the US Open for the Team Demo competition. Team Infinity had the tricks, charisma, and creative bo techniques needed to put on a great performance as they threw their weapons back and forth to each other. Team 100% Performance was up next with a dramatic music track. They had smooth tricks, intensity, and swords – a weapon not as popular in the Midwest, where Team Infinity mainly resides. 100% Performance came out with the win and the ISKA title.

The men’s forms competition was next and William Cornell kicked it off with his strong Japanese form. Matt Emig came out next to compare his tricks to Cornell’s powerful stances. After breaking his leg awhile back and making a recent comeback, Emig showed he can still hang and rise above everyone else. Marc Canonizado stepped out with his new hair style that, well, stood up. Canonizado also brought strong hands, clean standing kicks, and his signature “spider man” back-flip. In the end, the judges loved the smooth flow of Canonizado and awarded him the ISKA title.

Team Synchronized Forms sponsored by Paul Mitchell products was a Paul Mitchell event as Paul Mitchell Black (Austin Crain and Matt Emig) faced Paul Mitchell White (Marc Canonizado and Caitlin Dechelle). Paul Mitchell Black bowed in first. They were strong all the way through in an aggressive spectacle of one of the longest trick combinations seen in Team Synch. Paul Mitchell White added interesting choreography and were synchronized all the way through but Paul Mitchell Black, in their first time performing together, took the win.

The spectacular Night of Champions also featured and International Continuous Fighting match, a Submission Grappling Challenge bout and an ISJA Sport Ju-Jitsu contest blended in to the ISKA World Championships competitions. The variety of martial arts entertainment and flawless staging of the events really lived up to the show’s billing as a “martial arts extravaganza”.

Robbie Lavoie and Chris Rappold were the first to fight in the team fighting finals. Lavoie racked up three points for the All Stars and Rappold wasn’t able to get anything in, leaving Paul Mitchell at 0. Jack Felton and Travis Plowden fought second. Plowden gained two points for Paul Mitchell whereas Felton racked up six more points for the USA All Stars. It was looking gloomy for Team Paul Mitchell as Deandre Walker took on Raymond Daniels of USA All Stars in the final round. Almost all exchanges awarded one point to either fighter and in the end, the All Stars came out ahead by a respectable margin.

With some of the most exciting performers on the circuit today, it was fitting that the final event of the evening was the adult weapons competition. Austin Jorgenson the US Open Cinderella story, took the stage first with another drunken-style routine with a broadsword. It was something many audience members had not seen so they responded energetically as he wobbled around the stage as though intoxicated. Rudy Reynon, one of the most mimicked competitors on the circuit, came out next. Reynon hit his form solidly with his kama tricks rising to new levels as he spun the blade around his finger and one kama around the other kama. Matt Emig was on stage next to heighten the audience experience. He was on a roll, but lost his weapon on one of the most impressive releases seen with a nunchuck. Kalman Csoka brought both of his swords out to wrap the show up. Csoka was the most charismatic and changed the timing on his double release for an incredible performance. It was Csoka’s closing performance that took the win and the ISKA title for the evening.

With the final performance over, it was like the audience could finally let out the collective breath it had been holding through all the amazing performances. But the magic was not over as many of the competitors and spectators were planning additional fun at Disney the next day. It was still hot outside despite the late hour but the night’s festivities continued at the resort bar and swimming pool as the lights over another US Open Night of Champions dimmed.
